Amid some major changes in the radio industry as NZME and MediaWorks embarked on their new multi-platform strategies, Gill Stewart stepped down as general manager of The Radio Bureau in February after around ten years in the role. And she’s now stepped up to the position of chief executive of the Marketing Association, replacing Michael Pryor.
The MA received over 50 applications for the role and chairman and chief executive of Cigna Lance Walker said it was delighted to have attracted someone of her calibre to lead the organisation.
“Gill’s experience, energy, networks, commercial acumen and passion for the part that marketing and marketers play in business success are the ideal mix as we continue to strengthen and grow the Marketing Association.”
Stewart brings to the role 25 years of experience in the media industry in both Australia and New Zealand and Walker says her appointment comes at a time when the MA is evolving its strategic positioning to being more of a proactive champion for the practice of professional marketing and the role that marketers have in building a better, stronger New Zealand. This builds on recent initiatives such as its partnership with the internationally recognised Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK) professional accreditation programme, and the expansion of its courses, conferences and education programmes, including new programmes targeted at SMEs.
“I would be hard pressed to find a more exciting leadership opportunity,” says Stewart. “The Marketing Association is a highly regarded organisation that offers a wonderful array of products and services for its 6,500 members. But what really excites me is the great potential that still exists to deepen the connection with those members, and the wider business community, and to be a key partner with them throughout their marketing careers.”
Walker thanked Paul Scoringe for stepping into the acting chief executive role following Pryor’s departure.
“Having had to do that myself in the past I know it’s not easy, but Paul has done a great job and it is a great credit to him,” he says.
Stewart takes up her new role on 26 June. And, as an added benefit, she’ll be working in the MA’s swanky new offices in Parnell.
