Everyone loves a good awards show and as we head into awards season, developments keep rolling in, starting off with the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The new Creative Effectiveness award, which Colenso BBDO’s James Hurman is serving as a judge on, has taken in a whopping 142 entries, with five of those coming from New Zealand. Cannes Lions chairman Terry Savage says this was a much higher number than the organisers were anticipating.

“These are complex entries to submit and judging will be tough, but no doubt those worthy of a Lion will be much admired and will set the bar for future years”.

Aside from New Zeaalnd’s five entries, The U.S. had the highest number of entries with 27, followed by the UK with 17. Germany ranks third with nine entries and Australia takes out fourth place with eight entries.

The new category is described as “honouring creativity which has shown a measurable and proven impact on a client’s business”. An award that is more Effie than Axis, we’re told that the entries will be judged and awarded for strategy (25 percent), idea (25 percent) and results (50 percent).

The 20 judges on the Creative Effectiveness will be chaired by chairman of TBWA worldwide, Jean-Marie Dru. Winners will be announced on Saturday 25 June.

In other awards news, the 2011 Webby Awards are to be broadcast live via Facebook, meaning you can settle in and watch as New Zealand contenders drugs.com, Netsafe’s scammachine.co.nz and Orcon’s ‘Living Office’ vie for a prize (read all about the nominees here).

The Webby’s are set for their first live web broadcast to be aired on 13 June. As well as airing on the Webby’s own FB page, media partners The Huffington Post, and ESPN’s SportsNation will also broadcast the Show from their Facebook pages.

“This marks the first time in Webby history where viewers will have the ability to share in-progress highlights, interact on multiple screens, including mobile phone and tablet apps, and experience a video stream that put you right in the middle of all the action,” say organisers.
