Bring it on Google: Supply’s Scam Machine up for Webby honours

We told you about New Zealand’s Webby Awards finalists and official honorees a while back. But we missed one out: local graphic design and interactive design studio Supply, which was nominated in the IT Hardware/Software category for the Netsafe Scam Machine

The Scam Machine allows users to draw their unwitting friends into a leading role in a full-blown internet scam. After uploading a few basic details about a person you know, the website generates a current affairs news video, featuring that person as its target. Only mildly offensive, the Scam Machine pays testament to the seemingly obvious mistakes that many Kiwis actually make at the hands of online scam artists.

“To be considered, and to be up against the likes of Google is really amazing for a small country company,” says creative director Piri Tukere.  “We love the website that we have helped to create: it’s a clever, interesting and interactive way to teach people about money-grabbing online scams. The key is that it’s realistic, and it’s funny—Kiwis love to fool their mates.”

Videos created by users can be uploaded through social media and spread to friends who have been targeted in them.

Supply is up against Google, Dell, IBM and Nerd Communications in the category.

Voting for the Webby Awards People’s Choice has opened. And you can vote for the Scam Machine here.
