Colenso BBDO has picked up New Zealand’s only gongs at this year’s Clios, taking home a gold, silver and two bronzes at the awards in New York on May 26 and 27.

Its animated film Going West, produced for The New Zealand Book Council to promote books and reading, won gold in the TV Technique Animation category, Silver for TV Technique Sound Design and Bronze in the TV Public Service Single category. In addition, the agency’s ‘Bleeding Billboard’ for the Papakura District Council was awarded a bronze CLIO for Billboard Public Service Single.

Going West was the result of eight months’ work by Colenso BBDO and London’s Andersen M Studios. The work uses hand cut ‘pop up’ scenery to bring to life an excerpt from the Maurice Gee novel of the same name.

“It was great to see the Going West film, which brought to life a classic piece of New Zealand literature, gain such huge global traction on-line,” says Colenso’s executive creative director Nick Worthington.

It was viewed online more than 788,000 times, inspired more than 3400 tweets on Twitter or blog posts worldwide and reached number 8 in the Viral Video Chart compiled by Unruly Media.

The latest awards for ‘Going West’ follow Colenso’s two golds in the 2010 AXIS Awards and the Grand Prize from the New York Museum of Art and Design’s Moving Paper festival. The Bronze Clio for ‘Bleeding Billboard’ comes on top of recognition at Show, Award, Cannes and Axis.
