Screen shot 2009-12-16 at 10.30.06 PMHumans love lists (especially at the end of the year). And humans also love videos (particularly of cats, funny dances and fellow humans injuring and/or embarrassing themselves). So there’s almost no better combination – aside, of course, from raspberry and coke – than the annual most-watched YouTube video list.

Our national carrier pulled off a stunner in 2009 with its body painted staff going toe to toe with the country’s most popular music videos: Air New Zealand’s Nothing to Hide and The Bare Essentials of Safety video (both of which are closing in on five million views globally), came in at number four and five respectively on the most-watched Kiwi-created content list. And the ads have been so popular that other airlines are even posting responses to them.

YouTube is dominated by music videos and music-related content (the five major record labels make up almost 65 percent of YouTube’s top 50 most watched videos) and it’s no different in New Zealand: taking the top three spots in the Kiwi content category were Smashproof featuring Gin Wigmore with Brother, J Williams with Ghetto Flower and Pulp Sport featuring P Diggs with I’m On A Goat. No wonder the record industry is trying to regain control of their content.

The top five most-watched ads in New Zealand were Cadbury Eyebrows, Air New Zealand Staff Have Nothing to Hide, T Mobile Dance, the creepy Evian Roller Babies and Nike Skateboarding’s Today was a Good Day.

And, in case you were wondering how ridiculous the world has become, the top five most watched videos globally in 2009 were Susan Boyle – Britain’s Got Talent (120+ million views), David After Dentist (36+ million views), JK Wedding Entrance Dance (33+ million views), New Moon Movie Trailer (30+ million views) and Evian Roller Babies (27+ million views).
