Local newspaper heroes
NZ rags did good at the 2009 Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association Awards (PANPA) held in Sydney last week.
Fairfax Media is licking its chops after the choice morsels it received. The Timaru Herald won the display advertising and the classified categories for newspapers with a circulation up to 25,000. The Nelson Mail was awarded the marketing award in the same newspaper circulation bracket.

Best lifestyle photograph of the year was by John Selkirk of The Dominion Post for capturing the moment when a model went tripping down the catwalk at an Annah Stretton fashion show.
Fairfax Media’s Australian papers dominated top categories, including The Sydney Morning Herald named newspaper of the year and Melbourne’s The Sunday Age named best Sunday newspaper.
APN fared pretty well too. The New Zealand Herald took home the awards for best classified advertising and best young readers for newspapers with a circulation of over 90,000. Bay of Plenty Times won the events category for newspapers with a circulation up to 25,000. It was also a highly commended newspaper of the year for circulation up to 25,000.
And the good ol’ Otago Daily Times came tops in the young readers category for newspapers with a circulation between 25,001 and 90,000.
There were a record 369 entries this year from newspapers in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan.
