Kiwi agencies vie for dodgeball glory

Forget the rowing world cup, forget the basketball world cup; the real action last week was at Yahoo’s Dodgeball Keg Cup. Eight agencies—OMD, Mediacom, iProspect, Starcom/ZenithOptimedia, Ikon, Carat, Lassoo, and Get Communications—competed in the tournament for the honour of winning the moderately prestigious Keg Cup and the highly coveted 50-litre keg of beer.

By the end of the, after a gruelling afternoon of competition, only two Dentsu Aegis-owned agencies were left: iProspect and Carat. And as they duelled on the court, it soon became clear that one team was better trained in the five D’s of dodgeball. Dodging, ducking, dipping, diving and … erm … dodging its way through the final, iProspect eventually proved too strong for Carat and thus lifted the trophy. As a consolation, Terry Bright from Carat picked up player of the day.

And despite the fact that dodgeball is a sport about “violence, exclusion and degradation,” Yahoo also took a moment to applaud the teams that didn’t reach the heights of the final. Despite coming dead last, Mediacom was announced as the best dressed team of the day. Shot of the day went to Hamish Scott-Knight from Lassoo who, having just recovered from a sprained ankle, attempted to lob a ball into two opponents who collided mid catch and were both given out. And in other highlights Mediacom pulled out a mid-game human pyramid in a stylish yet ultimately unsuccessful attempt to avoid the wooden spoon.
