Vintage style app puts Verdict/MEA in line for mobile award

The recently merged creative agency Verdict/MEA Mobile is a finalist in this year’s Australian Mobile Awards for its campaign promoting Rip Curl’s 51st annual Pro Surf competition.

The iSupr8 video app the Hamilton firm created for the campaign made the iTunes top 20 list in about 40 countries in the iPad and iPhone photography category and nearly 300,000 new users downloaded it during the three week campaign, it says.

The agency recently acquired iPhone developer SoftwareX and director Rodney Macfarlane says the finalist placing recognises the capabilities of the team it’s put together.

“The agency’s long history and credentials in creative marketing and communications, together with our new team, mean we can now produce really innovative digital campaigns in house,” he says.

According to the awards’ website, iSupr8 grades each pixel in an iPhone or iPad video based on exposure, adding “old school” effects.

“For this limited edition app, a special Rip Curl film-stock was developed for our users which is ideal for capturing the good times at the beach.” the agency says on the awards’ website.

“It featured a unique combination of high contrasts (for dark shadows in the sun) and saturated blues (for a washed out sky and sea), with a sandy/gritty grain.”

The campaign also included a Rip Curl branded camera case and the films made using the app could be shared via social media and email.
