Instagram and Twitter cut ties

It’s official; Instagram and Twitter are no longer BFFs.

After several weeks of thrusts and parries, Instagram no longer allows images from its 100 million users to be displayed on Twitter, according to a statement made by Instagram to AllThingsD.

Twitter users will notice that instead of  Instagram photos automatically displaying inline on their Twitter feeds,  they are now redirected to the photo on Instagram’s website.

This escalation follows Instagram disabling Twitter card support last week causing its images to be rendered incorrectly inside of Twitter.

Speaking at the Le Web conference in France last week, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom says the move is to bring more eyeballs to the image-centric social network. Systrom told the audience the company will be run as its own business alongside of Facebook, which finalised its purchase of Instagram in September.

Last month Instagram rolled out profile pages for its users, with some suggesting it’s only a matter of time before advertising is rolled out on the network.

Don’t worry Twitterites, the microblogging service looks to be getting its own hipster-friendly filter and photo editing system ready for launch before Christmas.

Meantime, there’s still no interesting news from Flickr (you remember Flickr, right?).

And now, a song about Instagram to the tune of a song from the world’s best band – Nickelback.
