Instant Kiwi celebrates 20th anniversary

instant kiwi goldieCongrats to the little Kiwi that could – Instant Kiwi scratchies turn 20 years old this month. Interbrand has been the design company responsible for all the Instant Kiwi designs since the very first scratchie in 1989. Two new IKs have been released to celebrate the birthday – a collector’s edition Kiwi Treasures $1 ticket and a gold foil $3 Crossword.

There have been about 1000 tickets designed over the years, many illustrating unique Kiwi culture, such as the Rugby World Cup, Whitbread and America's Cup yachting, Te Papa, First Light and Goldie the Kiwi. NZ Lotteries is also bringing back one of New Zealand’s most memorable commercial characters – the bungy jumping fisherman (see TVC of the Week) – and teamed him up with a new favourite for extra laughs. Since 1989, New Zealanders have spent more than $2.3b on Instant Kiwis. There have been more than 303 million winners earning a total prize pool of $872m. NZ Lotteries has poured back around $2.7m into the community from Lotto and IK sales.

Wanna know who’s had the most IK winners (per head of population)? Southland followed by New Plymouth, South Taranaki, Wanganui and Rangitikei districts, and third place is the Napier, Central Hawkes Bay and Gisborne region. Hornby Mall and Countdown Eastgate Lotto shops in Christchurch have sold the most IK top prizes.
